Reformed church

It can not be taken as the first church built in this village. We can only have guesses about where the first church could have been, the time of its building and the way it could have looked like.

So sequentially this is the second church. It was probably built after the Tartar havoc, but we can not define the precise year. It has been built a church, which according to the needs of the times was considerably bigger than the first one. This church was the ancestor of the church from our times.

The frequent alterations wear off the characteristics of its original style. The signs alluding to probably the 14 th century (as for instance the line of the pillars), lead us to the conclusion that the church might have been characterized by ogive-shapes, and it might originally have domed ceiling and a colonnade in the middle. The colonnade divided the room, forming a space with two naves. According to the records, these columns were traditionally ornamented with “human figures carved into stone”, which is an allusion to pillars decorated with fretwork.

In time the old features have disappear: the ceiling is changed; the ogive windows are being walled up, and new windows are cut instead; the one-time sanctuary vanishes, and it is replaced by a balcony, on which the organ is placed. Initially the tower should have also been located here; the ruins of the tower can be seen even at the middle of the 19 th century. The original size of the church is considered big (26 x 14 m), which suggests the presence of a high number of inhabitants in the village.

The church is surrounded by stonewall. At the outside of the wall there are two marble tablets, one from the year 1908, the other from 1940. These are memorials to the brave death of Jármy Ferencz, a Kuruc captain, who was slaughtered together with his people at the church wall on the 7 th January 1704. They rest there even in our days. There are also two German soldiers laid to rest in the churchyard; they fought from the church-tower at the time of the World War.

Initially there have been three bells in the tower: one of them scaling 198 kg (from the year 1786), the second 358 kg (from the year 1815), and the third one 573 kg (from the year 1805). In the 9 th April 1917 according to the measures taken by World War I., two bells were taken for military purposes. It was left behind only the biggest one. In 1955 there have been installed an other bell near the old one, a smaller one. The old clockwork, coming from the clock factory of Müller János in Budapest, is also located in the tower. This clock with three counterweights is still functioning nowadays. After the renovation from the year 1802 the church gets a completely new shape in and out; its whole structure is changed.

The World War II leaves grim imprints on the church. In 1948 the state expropriates two schools and the old vicarage (then it was the house of the chorister-teacher) from the church. The vicarage is ravaged; the documents and registers are destroyed, and the ecclesiastical objects vanished. We can only find out from the religious publications of the time what kind of cups and jugs have been in the property of the church: silver-gilt cup from the year 1614, with the inscription B.S.D.; a cup from the year 1621; baptismal bowl from the year 1687; baptismal can from the year 1780. Though ravaged by fires and wars, due to the donations and efforts of the inhabitants, the church could not be destroyed. In 1979 the church undergoes a significant renovation sponsored by the donations of the inhabitants.

In 1991 the community establishes town-twinning relationship with the community of quarter Elden of the town Arnhem, located on South-Netherlands. The town twinning has a lot of benefits to the spiritual life. Between 1991 and 1992 a new wing is built to the vicarage, called “Ark” (“Bárka”), which serves to the deepening of the spiritual life. This wing gives room to catechism, conferences, but also to exhibitions.

The tower and the roof have been repaired in 1994. In 1995 the whole interior of the church has been renovated, followed in 1996 by the exterior of the church and the stone fence surrounding the churchyard. The church has been re-consecrated by Dr. Kocsis Elemér, the bishop of the Reformed Diocese of the Region beyond the Tisa, on the occasion of the 3 rd Hungarian Reformed World Meeting. On the 30 th June 2002 there was praise on the honour of the renovation of the 200-years old church. At the same day on the afternoon Derencsényi Istvan, the dean of Debrecen blessed the renewed organ that has been sounded by the organist Szepsi Kátoly for the first time during the festive service.

In the ancient earth castle has been set up a monument on the occasion of the Millennium in the year 1896. The obelisk has inscriptions on each side; on its top there is a Turul (the Turul is the mythological bird of the origin myth of the Hungarian people) with a sword on his beak. This monument has been destroyed in 1920; only the pedestal remained, which can be seen even in our days.

On the 6 th October 1942 within the confines of a festivity took place the blessing of the second monument that was carved of white ashlars in shape of a Turul placed on the centre of the village, and on two sides of the monument there were placed the roll of honour of those who died in the World War I. This monument has also been destroyed by the end of the World War. On the 13 th May 2001 there has been set up a third monument, as the sign of hope in the new millennium.

The catholic church

Once the catholic community had a church built to the honour of the apostle Saint Peter (from here comes the name Peter street). The current church, which has been built for three years, was blessed in honour of the Assumption of Mary on the 15 th August 1826 in the time of bishop Vurum József. The tower is 26 m high, 21 m long and 12 m wide.

Its altarpiece and organ (with 6 registers) are from the 1830's. The life-sized statue of Marie was brought from the Italian Tyrol in 1912. The mosaic paintings and the metallic frame of the window were made in 1919 from the donations of Szentkirályi Zoltán. The pulpit and the benches were made in the same year.

Initially there were three bells in the steeple. Two of the bells were taken away from the church in 1914, remaining only the smallest. In 1926 the church got a new six-quintal scaling bell from Austria, which cracked by the Whitsuntide of the year 1985. In 1986, instead of the cracked one, there was made a four and a half quintal bell in the workshop of the reformed priest Vass Zoltán from Tinca.

The exterior of the church has been renovated in 1973, in the time of prebend Gocsy György and in 1990, in the time of reverend Polgár János. There were painted three murals on the ceiling of the church: the “Last Supper”, the “Gethsemane-garden” and the “Transfiguration” (“Urunk színeváltozása”).

Among the ecclesial objects of the church is worth mentioning the eucharist rack and the liturgical cup.

The reformed church of Cauaceu

We ca n not tell for sure whether Cauaceu had an ancient church or not, but it is for sure that there has been a certain place, where the spiritual life of the community could be lead.

The church building contract left from the year 1785 is the record the beginning of the story of the still standing church. The foundation stone of the church has been deposed by the bishop Szilágyi Sámuel, who also donated the required lumber and the one-year income of the bodegas for the building operations.

Beginning from the year 1800 there are a lot of records left, most of them parish registry entries and entries referring to religious events. The building of the church, without the tower, has been ended in the year 1786, but the bishop could not live to see it ready, only his son, who was the curator of the church.

The pulpit and the balcony from the left side of the church, made in 1786 can still be seen in our days in its original elaboration. It was the nobleman Vas János who had the nowadays still-used liturgical table made in the year 1793 from lumber originating from the forest of the ecclesia.

The furniture and the location of the church are quite modest, clean, light and rustic. The bell brought from Sz őlős in 1777 has been placed in the belfry built in 1783. The nowadays still-existing tower has been built in 1829, many years after the construction works of church were over.

The most important ecclesial objects of the community:

  • The Holy Communion cup with the inscription: "Cup to the church of Reghin – 1624 – Naghi Imre". This cup is a proof of the settling in of the people from Reghin into Cauaceu.
  • The gently embroidered cover with the inscription: "Made for the St. ecclesia of Cauaceu by: KNEMET ISTVÁN and his wife PESTI ERZSÉBET ANNO 1733".

The renewed church has been blessed on the 10 th of December 1957, in the time of Büte János.

The last major inner-outer renovation of the church took place in the year 1976.
